Regular Degree Student

A student who fully meets the requirements for a graduate program offered by the Graduate School

Provisional Student

An applicant with deficiencies in preparation or scholarship and who on other grounds is judged by the department to be capable of completing a graduate program may be accepted on a provisional basis. Applicants who request admission during their final year of undergraduate work may be accepted on a provisional basis, pending subsequent filing of a supplementary transcript showing the degree awarded. Admissions clearance for such applicants must be obtained at least one month in advance of the term in which registration is requested. A provisional student will take a maximum of nine credit hours of course work per semester and will be allowed a maximum of one year to qualify as a regular degree student. A student who fails to achieve regular degree status after one year will not be allowed to continue in a graduate degree program at Howard University.

Non-Degree Student (Unclassified Student)

A student who meets all the requirements for admission to regular status but elects to pursue coursework only (for a maximum of 6 credits). A completed application package must be submitted in order to be considered as a non-degree student. * NOTE: Non-degree/unclassified students are NOT eligible to receive financial aid.

Former Student Returning (FSR)

A student who has been admitted to Howard University but lapsed in enrollment for at least one semester (not including summer). A completed graduate application must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the first day of classes. Once your application is submitted, the Associate Dean of Educational Affairs and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department will evaluate your application. You will receive notification via mail. Submitting your application early will facilitate a timely response prior to the first day of registration. Once the applicant has applied, he/she must:

  • Contact the director of graduate studies in his/her department for academic advising.

  • Submit an application by the graduate school deadline (application fee is not required).

  • Submit a Howard University transcript in sealed envelope.

  • Submit official transcripts from college/university attended since your last enrollment.

The Admissions committee of your department and the Associate Dean of Educational Affairs will evaluate your application. You will receive notification of the decision in writing from the Office of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions.
