Description of the project:

Race, Development, and Social Inequality:
Developing Cross-Cultural, Interdisciplinary Curricula in Brazil and the United States

Race, Development, and Social Inequality

The Project is a consortium exchange program with Howard University, Vanderbilt University, the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), and the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) and involves curriculum development and the exchange of students in an innovative interdisciplinary program bringing together international studies, history, economics, and other social sciences. Specifically, the consortium partners plan to develop courses (including a team-taught, electronically-delivered core course) and certificate programs around themes of access and equity in higher education. These themes draw on complementary expertise at all four consortium members.

Brazil Exchange Student

In order to give students greater theoretical and practical knowledge about the other country, at least sixteen Brazilian students will study at Howard University and Vanderbilt University; and a similar number of United State students will study at Universidade de São Paulo and the Universidade Federal da Bahia.

Student mobility will be fostered for advanced undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students by streamlining arrangements for study abroad and by intensifying the students' already strong language participation.

Funding Institutions

The financial support for students and faculty who participate will be subsidized through funding granted by the governments of the United States of America and Brazil, specifically the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) and the Fundação Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES).
