Introduction to Women's Studies
(compulsory course for all who take the Graduate Certificate -- 3 credit hours )

Introduction to Women's Studies is a survey course that introduces graduate students to the conceptual frameworks and issues that are integral to understanding the position and lives of women, particularly women of color.

Course Description

In this course we will:

  • discuss the intersection of gender, race, patriarchy, class, and caste to better understand the oppression that women deal with on a daily basis around the world.
  • analyze the concrete effects of these on the knowledge, attitudes, values, and popular culture that, in their turn, impact women and their families and
  • emphasize ways of thinking that challenge the assumptions that we take for granted about the construction of reality and examine ways of changing the social structure to ultimately improve the lives of women.

We hope to leave students who take this course with the feeling that they can make a difference in their own lives, the lives of their family members, and the lives of other women. This class will present the unique perspectives of race, class, and gender in each topic through exposure to both classic texts and recent research and theorizing. Using films and texts, this class will introduce students to materials about women in the ancient and medieval worlds, as well as the contemporary world. This class will also address issues that affect women nationally and internationally. Therefore, this course will be interdisciplinary, and cross-cultural in perspective, scope, and materials.
