Internship Opportunity
Co-Facilitate Workshops on
Sexual Exploitation with Teens in DC Public
Schools
Each
month, between 26 and 30 youth are picked up
off the streets of DC for soliciting sex.
Officials estimate that these numbers
represent one tenth of the youth involved in
commercial sex in our city. As minors
involved in commercial sex, these youth are
victims of sexual exploitation and human
trafficking under US federal law. 80-90% of
them have been victims of sexual abuse and
their involvement in commercial sex renders
them vulnerable to extreme sexual violence,
rape and physical and emotional abuse.
What is being done?
FAIR Fund
is a nonprofit working internationally as
well as here in the District of Columbia to
empower youth and women to fight sexual
exploitation, violence and human
trafficking. Last year, FAIR Fund piloted
our “Tell Your Friends” program in
collaboration with DC Public Schools with
teens around the district. The program is
designed to build a peer and adult community
network including teachers, parents,
administrators, youth service agencies,
medical professionals, and law enforcement
to respond to D.C. teens who are at high
risk or have been exposed to victimization
via dating violence or Commercial Sexual
Exploitation (CSE), which is considered to
be a form of human trafficking. The core of
the “Tell Your Friends” program is a
four-session curriculum designed to increase
teen understanding of their rights and
responsibilities in intimate partner
relationships, provide them with a deeper
understanding of the true nature of sexual
violence and teen prostitution, and connect
teens to FAIR Fund’s community-based
partners, counselors, and advocacy team.
What can you do?
FAIR Fund is seeking an
intern to co-facilitate workshops in schools
with DC teens. These workshops use FAIR
Fund’s “Tell Your Friends” curriculum to
create an open dialog with students about
the dangers of commercial sexual
exploitation, the stereotypes that
contribute to it, how to protect themselves
from exploitation and how to get out of
exploitative situations. Due to the
important role that gender plays in these
discussions, especially in urban classrooms,
FAIR Fund seeks a male intern who can
effectively connect and communicate with
male high school students and who is
sensitive to the issue of sexual violence.
We are happy to work with your school to
provide credit for the internship.
If you are interested, please
send your resume and cover letter to Eve at
eve@fairfund.org. Feel free to call 202
265 1505 with any questions.
