HOWARD UNIVERSITY GRADUATES

ITS LARGEST PH.D. CLASS

On May 10, 2008, Howard University graduated its largest Ph.D. class in the history of the University—101 Ph.D. recipients in the divisions of arts and humanities, biological and life sciences, engineering and physical sciences, and social sciences. The year also marks 50 years in which the Graduate School has awarded the Ph.D. degree, with the first Ph.D. awarded in 1958 in the field of chemistry. Since that time, the school has awarded approximately 2,600 doctoral degrees in 28 doctoral programs.  On May 8, the school’s first doctoral recipient in the field of communication arts and sciences, Dr. Johnetta G. Davis, associate dean of student affairs policy and director of the Office of Graduate Recruitment and Retention at the University of Maryland, College Park, delivered the keynote address at the Graduate School’s Hood Presentation Ceremony.

Howard University is the nation’s largest annual on-campus producer of African- American Ph.D. recipients, among a widely diverse group of Ph.D. recipients from around the world. During 2008, in addition to its celebration of the largest Ph.D. class, the Graduate School will continue to host 50th anniversary events, which will be posted on the school’s web site.
