HOWARD UNIVERSITY
GRADUATES
ITS LARGEST PH.D. CLASS
On May 10,
2008, Howard University graduated its largest
Ph.D. class in the history of the University—101
Ph.D. recipients in the divisions of arts and
humanities, biological and life sciences,
engineering and physical sciences, and social
sciences. The year also marks 50 years in which
the Graduate School has awarded the Ph.D.
degree, with the first Ph.D. awarded in 1958 in
the field of chemistry. Since that time, the
school has awarded approximately 2,600 doctoral
degrees in 28 doctoral programs. On May 8, the
school’s first doctoral recipient in the field
of communication arts and sciences, Dr. Johnetta
G. Davis, associate dean of student affairs
policy and director of the Office of Graduate
Recruitment and Retention at the University of
Maryland, College Park, delivered the keynote
address at the Graduate School’s Hood
Presentation Ceremony.
Howard
University is the nation’s largest annual
on-campus producer of African- American Ph.D.
recipients, among a widely diverse group of
Ph.D. recipients from around the world. During
2008, in addition to its celebration of the
largest Ph.D. class, the Graduate School will
continue to host 50th anniversary
events, which will be posted on the school’s web
site.
