Rice University's Future Faculty Workshop for Underrepresented Postdocs and Late Stage PhD Students

At Rice University we are strongly committed to increasing the diversity of science and engineering faculty and students. As part of this goal we are once again hosting a workshop targeted to underrepresented* graduate students and post-docs in Science, Engineering, and Psychology who are interested in pursuing an academic career. The Future Faculty Workshop, (formerly the Negotiating the Ideal Faculty Position Workshop), to be held September 10-11, 2012, is designed to provide participants hands-on experience to enhance their knowledge of and ability to find the right faculty position. In addition to the topics covered in panel discussions, the participants will get to spend a day with individual Rice departments and faculty members.

Travel expenses (flight or mileage), meals, and lodging costs will be provided for the workshop participants. Applications are due July 30. The online application can be found at http://advance.rice.edu/applicationform.aspx

Topics Covered in the Future Faculty Workshop include:

·         Finding the right institutional fit

·         Understanding what a search committee is looking for

·         Standing out in the interview

·         Negotiating a good start up package

·         Obtaining funding

·         Understanding the tenure process

Visits with Individual Departments may include:

·         Mock Job Interviews

·         Practice Job Talks

·         CV Reviews

In addition to submitting an application to the workshop, interested candidates also have the option to include their information in Rice’s National Database of Underrepresented Postdocs and PhDs. This Database is used by university search committees across the nation as they look for qualified candidates for their open faculty positions.

Please share the attached flier with qualified candidates who are interested in an academic career.

Thank you,

Kathleen Matthews
