The Howard University Learning Communities for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Academic Achievement (LCSAA) program will sponsor “Learning Communities Day” on Tuesday, April 24, 2007, in conjunction with the Howard University Center for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) and the University of Wisconsin. The event will be held on the campus of Howard University in the Carnegie Building, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It will be an informational and training conference for current and future faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Dr. Norman Fortenberry, director, Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education, National Academy of Engineering, will be the keynote speaker. LCSAA is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). The broad objective of LCSAA is to increase the achievement and retention of African-American students in STEM. For the past three years, Howard University has been involved in the project to create learning communities in STEM classes and among STEM faculty with three other Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Talladega College, Jackson State University, and Xavier University. LCSAA has made significant progress in the implementation of learning communities at each of the campuses. The
purpose of “Learning Communities Day” is to showcase the work at
Howard University; and to engage STEM, as well as other current and
future faculty at Howard University in a discussion about this critical
higher education reform in the hopes that other learning communities
will be implemented at Howard. Howard University’s graduate students
and faculty will present their respective LCSAA projects. For more
