The 2008 National Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Induction Ceremony

Monday, March 31, 2008 -- The third annual Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2008 at The Graduate Club on the campus of Yale University .  The Induction Ceremony was held during the Awards Dinner at the Yale Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education.  The Society was founded in honor of Edward A. Bouchet, the first African-American to earn a doctorate degree, which he received in Physics from Yale.  Each year, the Society inducts a select group of graduate students who serve as exemplars in their fields and who embody the characteristics of Dr. Bouchet.   

The Awards Dinner opened with welcome remarks by Dr. John Mangan, Assistant Dean of Yale Graduate School .  As dinner proceeded, Dr. John Butler, Dean of Yale Graduate School delivered a speech titled “What Kind of an Academia Do We Want?”, through which he encouraged the audience to never lose their “wonder” and to always seek answers to the different phenomena in our society.  Dean Butler’s comments were followed by the presentation of the Conference Student Awards and the Liza Cariaga-Lo Diversity Award.  The dinner closed with the Honor Society Induction Ceremony.   

The 25 inductees of 2008 were selected from the founding institutions, Howard University and Yale University , as well as Georgetown University and Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri .  This year, a total of 15 doctoral candidates from Howard, L. Simone Byrd, Atia Byll-Cataria, Jerry L. Crawford, II, Jamila A. Cupid, Cerise L. Glenn, Donise Michelle Johnson, Nana Aba Kweiba Sam, Cara L. Moyer, Ayanna Mogengege, Nneka O. Mokwunye, Muslimah ‘Ali Najee-ullah, Obinna B. Obah, Lisa R. Rawlings, Kellie D. Weiss, and Johnathan Wharton, were inducted by Dr. Chontrese Doswell Hayes, Assistant Dean, Howard University Graduate School and Dr. Curtis Patton Hayes, Professor Emeritus, Epidemiology and Public Health, Yale University .  Also in attendance was, Howard University Bouchet Honor Society Member, Tehani Finch.  Several of these inductees and members presented their scholarly research during the Conference.
