The workshop is designed for international, first-time, and
experienced teaching assistants/associates, lab assistants, as well
as for other graduate students who plan to pursue careers in the
professoriate. Session topics include Course Management and
University Procedural Issues, The Pros and Cons of Teaching Online,
Learning Styles of the Ne(x)t Generation, Meeting the Challenges of
Twenty-First Century Teaching, and Teaching in the Twenty-First
Century Science Lab.
The Graduate School requires that all TAs who are teachers of record
(Teaching Associates) or who assist faculty in teaching their
courses (Teaching Assistants) attend the workshop. Graduate
Assistants who have an interest in future careers as college or
university faculty are also urged to attend the workshop. All TAs
who are paid by the Graduate School are required to attend the
workshop as they will be signing their contracts at a designated
time at the end of the event.
This
year all TAs are required to attend the second day of
activities (Wednesday), which will revolve around the theme of
“Teaching the Ne(x)t Generation.” But activities for the
first
day (Tuesday) are especially designed for new TAs. Although
returning TAs are not required to attend the first day, they are
more than welcome to do so if they so choose.
Day two sessions will revolve around the theme of “Teaching the
Ne(x)t Generation.” Editors Diana and James Oblinger summarize the
concept of the "Net Generation" nicely in the introduction of
chapter two of the book:
Educating the Net Generation
