SOPHIA A NUR
is a PhD Student in the John H. Johnson School of
Communications where she studies Communication and Culture,
specifically health communication. She received her Master's
degree in African Studies from Howard University. Sophia
earned her undergraduate degree from Occidental College in
Los Angeles in Diplomacy and World Affairs with an emphasis
in African Politics and a minor in Religious Studies. Her
current research focuses the role sex
education programming and health communication in the spread
of HIV amongst Ethiopian youth. Sophia's involvement in
student organizations began in the 8th grade and her
dedication continues at Howard University. She was an active
general body and board member of the Graduate Student
Council where she acts as the current President.

YIESHA L THOMPSON
hails from San Francisco, CA. She graduated from San José
State University with a BS in Administration of Justice and
minor in Sociology. Following graduation, she went on to use
her newly acquired skills at the California Department of
Corrections; where she was able to explore the mentality of
inmates and further understand the justice system. Realizing
her passion and the need to create fairer laws and policies,
she moved to Washington, D.C. where she received a Masters
of Public Administration (MPA) and was awarded the Patricia
R. Harris Fellowship to work for Congressman Tom Lantos.
Currently a doctoral student studying Public Policy and
International Relations at Howard University she serves as
the 2007-2008 Vice President of the Graduate Student
Council. She previously held the positions of Judicial
Coordinator for the Graduate Student Council and President
of the Graduate Political Science Association.

S. NICOLE CATHEY
serves as Judicial Coordinator of the
Graduate Student Council. Originally from Jackson,
Mississippi, she earned her Bachelor of Science (BS) degree
in Mass Communications from Jackson State University and a
Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) degree
from Mississippi State University. She is a second year PhD
student majoring in Political Science at Howard University.
Her academic concentration areas are American Government,
Black Politics, and Political Communications. Her primary
interests include entrepreneurship, motivational speaking,
urban and community development, and traveling. She lives
by the philosophy, "In order to change our environment, we
must first change ourselves".
