NEW GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Deadline April 15, 2005

The Graduate School is in the process of finalizing plans for master's and Ph.D. students from Howard University to spend two months conducting research at Jadavpur University , Kolkata ( Calcutta ), India . In anticipation of the approval of these plans, we are soliciting applications from students who are interested in this research opportunity. This initiative encourages students to spend up to two months at Jadavpur University , in the capital of the eastern Indian state of Bengal , Kolkata ( Calcutta ). The length of the research period will be two months. Students can go to Jadavpur as early as June 2005.

General Eligibility

  • Graduate students from all departments
  • Research focus on India, US/India Studies, African American and Indian Studies or the African Diaspora in India

Specific Criteria

  • GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Availability of Jadavpur University faculty to advise in the particular area of research interest
  • Knowledge of an Indian language, particularly Hindi or Bengali, is desirable but not a prerequisite
  • Recommendation of Departmental Advisor and Director of Graduate Study

Terms and Conditions of the Award

  1. Airfare to Kolkata , India and return airfare provided by the Graduate School , Howard University
  2. Food and lodging in Kolkata ( Calcutta ) for two months. No cash provided; instead, Jadavpur University will provide hostel accommodation and meals.
  3. Students can go in summer 2005 and do research with a pre-appointed faculty advisor at Jadavpur University , and the approval of the Howard University Departmental Advisor and Director of Graduate Studies. Students who would prefer to go in fall 2005 or spring 2006 may receive academic credit for the research conducted at Jadavpur University upon the recommendation of their home department at Howard University . In order to receive credit, the student must register for an independent study before beginning the research experience at his/her own expense and follow the appropriate guidelines.
  4. Medical insurance will be the responsibility of the student.
  5. Students will be selected through an open competition by a committee appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School . Only students whose research interests can be supervised by faculty at Jadavpur University will be selected.

Application Materials

  1. Application letter on plain white paper indicating the topic of research and interest in the program
  2. Letters of recommendation from the advisor and director of graduate studies/department chair
  3. Abstract of research proposal of five pages, clearly outlining the objectives of the research, necessity for traveling to Jadavpur University, Kolkata (Calcutta), India to conduct the research, and how this research fits in with your master's or Ph.D. program
  4. One additional letter from someone who can speak about you and your interest in the research topic and necessity to travel to Kolkata ( Calcutta ), India to conduct the research

Attach the following as appendices:

  1. A list of sources already consulted and/or will consult, indicating knowledge of literature available on the subject of research
  2. Prior research experience, if any, in the subject that can be substantiated with a published/unpublished article or chapter of an ongoing work
  3. Research outline and work plan for two months at Jadavpur University
