A group of faculty and graduate students from Howard University , Jackson State University , Talladega College , and Xavier University of Louisiana met on the Howard University campus from February 4-5, 2005 for conference associated with the Learning Communities for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academic Achievement (LCSAA) Project (LCSAA) (Grant No. P116B04-0233).

Session topics included Using Problem-Based Learning in STEM Courses, Teaching Methods/Strategies to Enhance Academic Achievement in STEM, Consideration of Diverse Learning Styles in Teaching STEM, Assessing Student Learning, and Virtual STEM Communities .

The project was funded last fall at $446,486 by the US Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. It will provide an opportunity for current and future faculty members at the partner institutions to improve and create new teaching and learning strategies for enhancing student academic achievement in STEM. The project will link with several national movements designed to enhance student learning, including those advanced by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Dr. Orlando L. Taylor, vice provost for research and graduate dean at Howard University and Dr. Terrolyn Carter, an alumna of Xavier University of Louisiana and acting coordinator of Howard's nationally recognized Preparing Future Faculty program, are leading the initiative.
