(1) Regular Degree Student. A student who meets fully the stated requirements for a graduate program in the Graduate School will be accepted as a regular degree student.
(2) Provisional Student. An applicant with deficiencies in preparation or scholarship and who on other grounds is judged by the department to be capable of completing a graduate program may be accepted on a provisional basis. Applicants who request admission during their final year of undergraduate work may be accepted on a provisional basis, pending subsequent filing of a supplementary transcript showing the degree awarded. Admissions clearance for such applicants must be obtained at least one month in advance of the term in which registration is requested. A provisional student will take a maximum of nine credit hours of course work per semester and will be allowed a maximum of one year to qualify as a regular degree student. A student who fails to achieve regular degree status after one year will not be allowed to continue in a graduate degree program at Howard University.
(3) Non-Degree Student. A student who meets all the general requirements for admission to regular status but elects to pursue course work only will be accepted as a non-degree student. Such a student, however, must also meet any additional requirement prescribed by the department in which the student wishes to matriculate.
All categories of students entering the Graduate School must take the Proficiency Examination in Expository Writing administered through the Graduate Expository Writing Program during the first semester. Students who fail the examination must enroll in and successfully complete the Expository Writing Course. This regulation is a prerequisite for admission to candidacy in the Graduate School.
