Edward Alexander Bouchet

The Edward Alexander Bouchet Doctoral Scholars fellowship program is awarded to new Ph.D. students who are also new to the Graduate School.  It is designed to recruit academically talented students with an interest in college or university teaching to pursue Ph.D. studies from all disciplines to Howard University. The Bouchet award is offered on a competitive basis upon recommendation by the candidate’s prospective department chair and the Financial Aid Advisory Committee.

2009-2010

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates must be first time applicants to the Graduate School at Howard University in all disciplines. Howard University Graduate School admissions applications to Ph.D. programs for the fall 2009 semester must be submitted prior to the Bouchet deadline. The minimum, cumulative GPA requirement from the applicant's current institution is 3.5.  

TERMS

This award covers full tuition (not including student activity fees) and a stipend of $18,000 for the fall and spring semesters for each year of eligibility.  Successful applicants will be offered the award for up to 5 years with a baccalaureate degree and up to 3 with a master’s degree.  

Bouchet Scholars are required to participate in a 15 hour per week supervised internship beginning in mid-August and ending in mid-May for each academic year.   The Graduate School reserves the right to base annual renewal decisions on the evaluation of each award holder’s academic and internship performance.

APPLICATION

Applicants should submit a total of SIX (6) completed packages: ONE (1) original complete package and FIVE (5) copies of the completed package.  One complete package includes:

·        Bouchet Application (Download Form)

·        Current institution’s transcript

·        Scholarly academic or research writing sample (5 pages)

·       Statement addressing how the professoriate fits into the candidate’s career goals 3 letters of recommendation (1 from the prospective, academic chair at Howard; 2 from faculty members at the current institution)

 
In addition to the application package, top candidates will be asked to participate in an interview.  Applications will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Advisory Committee and recommended to the Dean for approval.  Upon the Dean's approval, applicants will be notified.  Candidates may participate in person or via teleconference.  PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, IF APPLICATIONS ARE INCOMPLETE FOR ANY REASON (i.e., not completely filled out, insufficient number of copies submitted, missing any required documents, etc.) THEY WILL NOT BE REVIEWED BY THE FINANCIAL AID ADVISORY COMMITTEE.  Applicants will NOT be notified in this event.
