Description

The Hawthorne Dissertation Award is a non-service, merit-based award available to students admitted to candidacy and in the terminal year of Ph.D. studies.  This award is for one academic year and is not renewable.  The award named for Edward Hawthorne, former Dean of the Graduate School, is designed to provide partial support of one credit hour each semester and a supply allowance up to $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) for research related expenses.  Recipients are expected to receive the Ph.D. degree by May 2010.

Eligibility

Applicants must have:

  1. evidence of terminal year progress towards the dissertation
  2. made sufficient research progress to indicate completion within the year of the award;
  3. admitted to candidacy; and
  4. obtained a minimum cumulative doctoral study grade point average of 3.2.

Terms and Specifications

The Dissertation Research Assistance Award is for one academic year and is not renewable. Applicants are to submit a detailed budget of up to $2,000 for dissertation research assistance support. Recipients are also expected to receive the Ph.D. degree by May 2010.

Application

Applicants should submit a total of SIX (6) completed packages: ONE (1) original complete package and FIVE (5) copies of the completed package.  One complete package includes:

·         the completed application form (Download form);

·        synopsis dissertation research statement of expected completion date signed by academic advisor.

·        a dissertation progress report signed by the dissertation advisor, not to exceed 5 pages, which should include title, objectives, methodology, preliminary findings, and significance of the research;

·      three Appraisal of Applicant's forms completed by the major dissertation advisor and two other persons who are able to evaluate the applicant's competence as a scholar and a researcher.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by an advisory committee to the Office of Retention and Support Programs and will be judged on the assessment of:

  1. the dissertation progress report (50%);
  2. recommendations (20%); and
  3. academic and professional accomplishments of applicants (30%).

In addition to the application package, top candidates will be asked to participate in an interview.  Candidates may participate in person or via teleconference.  Applications will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Advisory Committee and recommended to the Dean for approval.  Upon the Dean's approval, applicants will  be notified.  PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, IF APPLICATIONS ARE INCOMPLETE FOR ANY REASON (i.e., not completely filled out, insufficient number of copies submitted, missing any required documents, etc.) THEY WILL NOT BE REVIEWED BY THE FINANCIAL AID ADVISORY COMMITTEE.  Applicants will NOT be notified in this event.
