DESCRIPTION

The Ronald E. McNair Graduate Assistantship Program is designed to support new and continuing students who are seeking a Ph.D. and were McNair scholars as undergraduates. The McNair Assistantship is merit-based and offered on a competitive basis to students pursuing doctoral studies from all disciplines upon recommendation by the Financial Aid Advisory Committee.

ELIGIBILITY

Domestic and International students are eligible for this assistantship. Candidates must be applying to a Ph.D. program and submit a Howard University Graduate School admission application prior to the McNair graduate assistantship deadline. The minimum, cumulative GPA requirement is 3.2 from the candidate’s current institution.  

AWARDS

Recipients of the Assistantship will receive full remission of tuition (not including student activity fees) and a stipend of $20,000 for the fall and spring semesters for each year of eligibility.  Recipients will be offered the award for up to 5 years with a baccalaureate degree and up to 3 years with a master’s degree.   

TERMS

McNair graduate assistantship recipients are required to participate in a 15-hour per week supervised internship beginning in mid-August and ending in mid-May of each academic year.  The Graduate School reserves the right to base annual renewal decisions on the evaluation of each award holder’s academic and internship performance.

APPLICATION       

Applicants should submit a total of SIX (6) completed packages: ONE (1) original complete package and FIVE (5) copies of the completed package:

    
Ø       1 Original Completed McNair Graduate Assistantship Form (Download Form) AND 5 copies

Ø       1 Official, sealed transcript from current or most recently attended institution AND 5 copies

Ø       1 Five-page scholarly academic or research writing sample AND 5 copies

Ø       1 Statement of research interest AND 5 copies

Ø       3 letters of recommendation:

·  1 from the Undergraduate McNair Program Director AND 5 copies

·  2 from faculty members at the current institution AND 5 copies

DO NOT INCLUDE MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT LISTED HERE, THEY WILL BE DISCARDED.

In addition to the application package, top candidates will be asked to participate in an interview.  Interviews may take place in person or via teleconference.   Applications will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Advisory Committee and recommended to the Dean for approval.  Upon the Dean's approval, applicants will be notified.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, IF APPLICATIONS ARE INCOMPLETE FOR ANY REASON (i.e., not completely filled out, insufficient number of copies submitted, missing any required documents, etc.) THEY WILL NOT BE REVIEWED BY THE FINANCIAL AID ADVISORY COMMITTEE.  Applicants will NOT be notified in this event.
