 Description

The Ronald E. McNair graduate assistantship program is designed to support talented McNair schlars pursuing Ph.D. programs in all disciplines.The McNair Assistantship is merit-based and offered on a competitive basis upon recommendation by the Financial Aid Advisory Committee.

ELIGIBILITY:           Candidates must submit a Howard University Graduate School
                              admission application prior to the McNair graduate assistantship
                              deadline.  The minimum, cumulative GPA requirement is 3.2 from
                              the candidate’s current institution.  

AWARDS:                Full tuition (not including student activity fees) and a stipend of
                             $16,000 for the fall and spring semesters for each year of
                             eligibility.   Successful applicants will be offered the award for up
                             to 5 years with a baccalaureate degree and up to 3 years with a
                             master’s degree.    

TERMS:                       McNair graduate assistantship recipients are required to participate
                             in a 15 hour per week supervised internship beginning in mid-
                             August and ending in mid-May of each academic year.   The
                             Graduate School reserves the right to base annual renewal
                             decisions on the evaluation of each award holder’s academic and
                             internship performance.  
 

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, February 15, 2008.

APPLICATION:        Applicants should submit One original and five copies of the following :
 

  • McNair Graduate Assistantship Form (Download Form)

  • Current institution’s transcript

  • Scholarly academic or research writing sample (5 pages)

  • 3 Letters of recommendation (1 from undergraduate McNair program director; 2 from faculty members at the candidate’s current institution) 

In addition to the application package, top candidates must participate in an interview on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 with the Financial Aid Advisory Committee.   Candidates may participate in person or via teleconference.  Top applicants will be contacted February 26 and 27, 2008 to schedule the interview.
