The Department of Biology offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The department offers two major areas of concentration:

  1. Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) and
  2. Ecological, Environmental and Systematic Biology (EESB).
General Admission Requirements

A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in major course work is required. Each graduate department may have additional "special admission requirements" which are noted on this page.

For International Applicants

In addition to the requirements listed above you must meet the following:

  • Official transcripts, certificates and/or mark/grade sheets must be sent directly from the college or university to the Office of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions, and must show proof of degree(s) earned, courses taken and marks/grades received. Also, ALL transcripts must be evaluated by World Education Services (www.wes.org) or AACRAO (www.aacrao.org) and be forwarded to Graduate Recruitment and Admissions.

Special Admission Requirements

Regular admission may be granted to a student having a bachelor's or master's degree and a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Appropriate training in biology and a minimum of one year of college level mathematics and physics and two years of chemistry are required.

A student who shows significant academic promise but does not meet all of the requirements for regular admission may be accepted provisionally. Such a student will not be classified as a regular graduate student until that student satisfies the requirements of provisional admission specified by the Graduate Studies Committee. These should be met during the first year of residence. A provisional student must obtain grades of B or better during the first year of full-time study.

Students with at least a bachelor's degree may be admitted to either the M.S. or Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. program is the major focus of the graduate program, and all students are encouraged to apply to it. 

Special Degree Requirements

Doctor of Philosophy

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy will be awarded upon the student's demonstration of mastery of certain fields of knowledge, ability to conduct independent research and ability to organize research into an acceptable dissertation that represents a significant contribution to the student's field of study. The specific requirements in addition to those listed in the GSAS document, "Rules and Regulations for the Pursuit of Academic Degrees," are:

  1. a minimum of 72 semester hours of graduate work, inclusive of the dissertation, 36 of which must be earned within the department
  2. an approved program of study including all such courses and requirements specified by the Graduate Faculty
  3. successful completion of Qualifying Examinations specified by the Guidance Committee
  4. an approved dissertation proposal
  5. a minimum of four semesters of research, and
  6. successful defense of the dissertation.

Master of Science

The degree of Master of Science will be awarded upon the student's demonstration of mastery of certain fields of knowledge and the completion of a formal thesis. The specific requirements in addition to those listed in the GSAS document, "Rules and Regulations for the Pursuit of Academic Degrees," are:

  1. a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work, inclusive of the thesis, 15 of which must be earned within the department
  2. an approved program of study including all such courses and requirements specified by the Graduate Faculty
  3. successful completion of Qualifying Examinations specified by the Guidance Committee and
  4. successful defense of the thesis.
Other Departmental Requirements
Each degree candidate is required to take and pass a comprehensive examination.
