Regular admission may be granted to a student having a bachelor's or master's degree and a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Appropriate training in biology and a minimum of one year of college level mathematics and physics and two years of chemistry are required.
A student who shows significant academic promise but does not meet all of the requirements for regular admission may be accepted provisionally. Such a student will not be classified as a regular graduate student until that student satisfies the requirements of provisional admission specified by the Graduate Studies Committee. These should be met during the first year of residence. A provisional student must obtain grades of B or better during the first year of full-time study.
Students with at least a bachelor's degree may be admitted to either the M.S. or Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. program is the major focus of the graduate program, and all students are encouraged to apply to it.
