Special Admission Requirements

Master of Engineering

Admission preference to the master's program is given to those individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution, and who have accumulated an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 out of a possible 4.0.

In special circumstances, individuals having a lower GPA or with degrees in other disciplines or branches of engineering may be provisionally admitted. In such cases, entrants may be asked to satisfactorily complete one or two undergraduate preparatory courses and maintain a GPA of 3.00 in the first semester of residence. These preparatory courses will not contribute credits toward the degree requirements.

Doctor of Philosophy

Admission to the Ph.D. program is accorded those applicants holding a degree in electrical engineering from a nationally or regionally accredited institution and possessing a GPA at least 3.0 out of a possible 4.0. Admission will also be granted to those applicants with equivalent qualifications from foreign institutions.

Special Degree Requirements

Master of Engineering

Students must complete a minimum of 24 or 33 semester credits, depending on which program option is chosen, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. All students must take the following courses: 235-501 Graduate Seminar (two semesters); 235-502, Engineering Analysis A and 235-503, Engineering Analysis B (two semesters). Additionally, all graduate students must pass the Expository English examination in their first semester.

The department provides two optional methods under which students may complete the master's degree requirements: thesis and non-thesis.

Thesis option. To obtain the master's degree under this option requires the satisfactory completion of 24 semester credits of course work and 6 semester credits of a thesis (235-599). On completion of the thesis, a formal defense before a thesis examining committee is required.

Non-thesis Option. To obtain the master's degree under this option requires the satisfactory completion of 33 semester credit hours of course work. Under this option, comprehensive examinations are required for specified course work; additionally, students are required to develop a research project and deliver an oral report, and/or write a technical paper. A student who is initially registered as a Thesis Option student, may not change to a Non-thesis Option if they have received any thesis grades. Comprehensive examinations are required of students under this option.

Doctor of Philosophy

A minimum of 72 semester hours of credit beyond the baccalaureate degree is required for the Ph.D. degree. Students entering the program with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering must successfully complete at least 48 semester credits of course work in the Department of Electrical Engineering, minimum of 12 semester credits of course work external to the department, and 12 semester credits of dissertation research.

Students entering with a master's degree in electrical engineering may be granted up to 24 semester credits toward the 72 semester credit total. To satisfy the total requirement, each such student must successfully complete at least 70 percent of the remaining semester credits in electrical engineering courses, 30 percent in courses of other departments of the University, and a minimum of 12 semester credits of dissertation research. Students must also pass qualifying and preliminary examinations

Publishing Requirements

Ph.D. students are required to provide evidence that they have submitted a manuscript based on their dissertation research to a refereed journal or a professional conference before scheduling the final oral defense.
