The Ph.D. program in social work is research oriented and interdisciplinary in nature. it prepares graduates for leadership positions in the profession and for careers as social work researchers and educators. Four concentrations are offered: health and mental health, family and child services, displaced populations, and social gerontology.
Generally, candidates must have earned a Master of Social Work degree to be admitted to the Ph.D. program. There is a provision to accept a limited number of non-MSW students who have Masters of Arts degrees or Masters of Science degrees in an allied field such as sociology, psychology, human development, and family studies. In each case, the student must have a superior academic record with at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 point scale. The student will be required to get his/her MSW degree during the process of working on the Ph.D. degree.
