ABOUT THE GRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL

The graduate students at Howard University established the Graduate Student Council (GSC) in 1967. All students duly registered in the Graduate School, pursuing degrees higher than the baccalaureate degree are members of the Graduate Student Council. The Graduate Student Council is the top policy-making body, which governs the functions and activities of the organization.

The purposes for which the organization was established are (1) to act as a vehicle for intelligent (and well disciplined) channeling of ideas, (2) to serve as a forum for the discussion of ideas for the benefit of Howard University graduate students, (3) to advocate for the resolution of problems between graduate students and the faculty and administration of Howard University, and (4) to develop a concerted action for reasonable resolutions of problems by and among graduate students.

The Executive Body of the Graduate Student Council is composed of representatives elected by graduate students in the various departments of the Graduate School. This body then elects its officers. For the current academic year, 2008-2009, the officers are as follows:

S. Nicole Cathey, President Elect

Sechaba Khoapa, VP Elect

Deshonna Collier, Interim PR/Communications Manager

Christa Freeman, Interim, Fiscal Coordinator

Camonia Long, Interim, Judicial Coordinator

Jerome Hunt, GSC Rep Elect to GSA and GSA Coordinator

Yiesha Thompson, GSC Rep Elect to GSA and GSA Grievance Coordinator
