Program for Academic Student Services (PASS)
Expository Writing Exam


The English Proficiency Examination (EPE) in Expository Writing is a requirement for all entering graduate students (and all continuing or former graduate students returning who have yet to take the exam).  The exam must be taken during the first semester of your graduate program.

Exception:
Entering graduate students who have GRE Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) scores of 5 and above are EXEMPT from the EPE.  These students must bring official copies of their GRE-AWA scores, along with a picture ID to receive the exemption.  Please report to Graduate School, Room 310 with the required documentation.

NOTE: As of Fall 2005, students may only sit for the exam once.  Students who attempt to register and/or sit for the exam multiple times will have their registration purged.

Exam Dates:  

As of Fall 2006, the expository writing exam is now given as a computer-based exam. Only a few slots will be made available for those students who have special needs and/or prefer to take the exam on paper.  Please note the different sessions organized for the exams and register accordingly.

*Please note that all graduate students must take the expository writing examination to be eligible for candidacy for master’s and Ph.D. degrees. It is strongly advised that students take the examination during the first semester of Graduate School.
