Exam Dates (Writing Program):

Expository Writing Exam


The English Proficiency Examination (EPE) in Expository Writing is a requirement for all entering graduate students (and all continuing or former graduate students returning who have yet to take the exam).  The exam must be taken during the first semester of your graduate program.

Exception:
Entering graduate students who have GRE Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) scores of 5 and above are EXEMPT from the EPE.  These students must bring official copies of their GRE-AWA scores, along with a picture ID to receive the exemption.  Please report to Graduate School, Room 315 with the required documentation.

NOTE: As of Fall 2005, students may only sit for the exam once.  Students who attempt to register and/or sit for the exam multiple times will have their registration purged.

Note: Students with additional needs (arrangements or special needs) should contact the PASS director before registering for an exam date. Please call 202.806.6864 for additional information.

Graduate students can begin to register online for the exam on Monday, April 28, 2008. Please visit the PASS homepage at: www.gs.howard.edu/ewp to complete a registration form. Your completed registration form, along with a picture ID, is REQUIRED for admission to the exam, so please be sure to bring a print out of your confirmation page.

Graduate students are encouraged to bring a dictionary, thesaurus, and ballpoint pens to the exam. Guidelines for preparing for the examination are currently available in the Graduate School, Room 317-A, as well as online (www.gs.howard.edu/ewp ).


Exam results will be posted online after Wednesday, September 12, 2007.

  • Graduate students who receive a satisfactory score on the exam are granted a Certificate in Expository Writing. This certificate will be available for pick-up after Friday, September 28, 2007.

  • Graduate students that do not successfully pass the EPE will be required to take the Graduate School’s (GSWP) Academic Communication course.  Information regarding class placement is provided with the exam results online.
