There are no degree programs at Howard University specifically dedicated to Migration Studies. However, there is relevant coursework in several disciplines, including

HIST 312. Afro-American Social Institutions and Culture. History of the development and evolution of the key institutions, class structure, lifestyles, and literary and musical expression in Afro-American life.

HIST 387. Afro-America and Africa . Examination of the Intellectual and cultural exchanges, economic interests, transfer and interaction of institutions, and population movements.

INTL 501.?? : The purpose of this course is to provide graduate students and professionals with a multi-disciplinary perspective on the underlying issues that affect interrelations- hips among nation states.

 

 

POLS 257. Multivariate Data Analysis . Analysis of the General Linear Model in social science research: statistical theory and the matrix approach in multivariate data analysis.

POLS 275. Urban Political Economy. An examination of the use of the tools of political economy to examine critical urban problems, such as the fiscal crisis of cities, urban structure, urban movements, and the crisis in such key areas as housing, education, employment, poverty, transportation, crime, etc.

SWPS-300.  Social Work with Displaced Populations I.  Provides knowledge and framework for understanding the experiences of displaced populations (immigrants, refugees, victims of natural and manmade disasters, et al.) and analyzing their problems and their diverse needs.

SWPS-401.   Social Work with Displaced Populations II . Continuation of SWPS-300, Social Work with Displaced Populations I. Analyzes social policies, programs, and intervention strategies utilized by service providers and institutions in response to the phenomena of displaced populations.

SWPS-300 & SWFI-3336. Field of Practice or Elective

SWPH 500. Overview of Research Methodology. Reviews the fundamentals of scientific methods. Familiarizes students with quantitative and qualitative research methods; research design and measurement; instrument development, validity and reliability; principles and types of sampling; essentials of program evaluation; demographic and secondary data analysis; and practicum in survey research.

SOCI 210. Elementary Statistics. Focuses on statistical methods applied to social data, employing measures of central tendency, dispersion, bivariate tests for significant differences and association, and simple regression.

SOCI 232. Population. Deals with the volume, composition, quality, growth, trends, and distribution of population, along with the relationship of populations to social organization.

SOCI 260. Sociology of African-Americans (formerly Negro in America ). Examines blacks as a minority group in American society.

SOCI 319. Advanced Statistics II . Focus on the application of multivariate statistical methods to social data, employing causal and factor analysis, and techniques for cross-tabulated data, including logic analysis.

Format of the academic year:

The Academic year is structured in 2 semesters (of 15 weeks each, and an extra week as mid-term holiday). The first semester runs from August to December, the second semester: from January to April.
