Description of the project: Race, Ethnicity and Migration

Race, Ethnicity and Migration

The Trans-Atlantic Graduate Exchange Program Race, Ethnicity and Migration Studies (REMS) is aimed for the academic exchange of students and faculty, with a view to developing joint research and innovative curricula. In a new multidisciplinary program we bring together several perspectives on international and ethnic relations, from different social sciences, such as sociology, political science, and anthropology.

The consortium partners, three American universities and four European universities plan to develop courses and certificate programs around the themes of race relations, ethnicity, and migration studies. These themes draw on complementary expertise at all seven consortium members.

Trans-Atlantic Student

In order to give students greater theoretical knowledge and research skills, at least 21 European students will study at Howard, University of Texas at El Paso and University of New Mexico and a similar number of American students will study at Utrecht University, University of Coimbra, University of Edinburgh and at the Central European University.

We foster student mobility among masters and doctoral (PhD) students by streamlining arrangements for study abroad and by intensifying language preparation, when necessary. This student exchange and joint research and curriculum development is designed to pave the way for long-term collaboration among the partner institutions, which will soon expand into other academic areas and involve additional units of the seven universities.

Funding Institutions

The current Trans-Atlantic Graduate Exchange Program on Race, Ethnicity and Migration Studies (REMS) is part of the EU/US Cooperation Programme in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training. This project of student and faculty exchange is funded by the Directorate General for Education and Culture of the European Comission (EU), and the Fund for the improvement of Postsecondary Education of the U.S. Department of Education (FIPSE).
