Studying at Howard University

Howard University students who wish to participate in the exchange will be approved for the exchange by satisfying the requirements of the Study Abroad program, which is administered by the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard.

At Howard, education has a truly global perspective---that is, it encompasses the wisdom, arts, economic realities, histories, and political viewpoints of people from around the world. Student and faculty members come from all over the United States and from many other countries, and the diversity of cultures, customs, and languages at Howard is rarely equaled on other college campuses. Students at Howard often become friends for life with people from Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe . Howard has a great many international alumni, many of whom are highly placed in their governments and in their countries' business, industrial, and educational institutions. The Office of International Student Services sponsors events and assists international students in adjusting to life on an American campus. In addition, a number of international campus organizations offer opportunities for international students to meet and socialize.

Housing at Howard University

Howard University provides accommodations for more than 4,200 students in a variety of styles and locations of student residence halls including traditional triple, double and single rooms, and suites and shared apartments with full kitchens. The majority of spaces reserved for new students are on the Main Campus and require the purchase of a meal plan. Students in other residence halls are serviced by a free shuttle bus service and have the option of purchasing a meal plan.

The residential experience contributes to educational achievement and personal development and often leads to life-long friendships. There are numerous and diverse educational, cultural, practical and social programs sponsored in the residence halls. Students in the residence halls are also encouraged to involve themselves in community service as part of their college experience. Undergraduate residence halls have professional live-in staff as well as receptionists at the front desk 24 hours every day. Community Directors are aided by Graduate Assistants and Resident Assistants.

Types of Facilities

Most buildings are of traditional dormitory design and contain accommodations for single, double or triple occupancy. Rooms are provided with basic furniture-desk, chair, bed, dresser and usually a bookshelf with desk light for each student. Semester room charges are due and payable at or before the beginning of each semester.

Howard Plaza Towers , which first opened in 1989, is a twin tower high-rise apartment complex at the Main Campus. The East Towers accommodates graduate/professional students, senior undergraduate students, honors students and a limited number of staff and faculty. The complex offers a variety of unfurnished apartments designed for multiple student occupancy or family living. Each bedroom is single occupancy and has its own individual lock and key for enhanced privacy. The Towers, classified as a dormitory under District of Columbia law, is owned by the University and managed by a private property management firm. The special application for the East Towers is handled by that firm. Occupancy fees (utilities included) are paid monthly and a security deposit is required. Housing agreements are available for both 10 and 12 months. For rate information and an application for Howard Plaza Towers East, contact the management directly at (202) 797-7148.
