Studying at Utrecht University
Ever since the 1980s, Utrecht University has been actively involved in student exchange programmes. Long before the Erasmus programme was launched by the European Commission in 1987, Utrecht University exchanged students with several partner universities in Europe and elsewhere. Once Erasmus got off the ground Utrecht started participating in approximately 70 Erasmus student and teaching staff mobility projects. Over the years, the number of students that are exchanged on an annual basis has increased to about 1000 incoming and 1000 outgoing students. Utrecht has participated in several exchange programmes over the years, like Tempus, EU-US and Leonardo. A considerable number of students are exchanged on a bilateral basis with universities mainly in Europe, the United States , Australia and South-East Asia . With the introduction of the Bachelor's/Master's system, it is expected that student exchange will become even more integrated within the course programmes than it used to be.
Utrecht University has an International Office that has considerable experience in establishing and maintaining links with universities all over the world. Incoming as well as outgoing students are assisted in many different ways by staff of the office. Housing is guaranteed for all incoming students and staff. All incoming students can be assigned student mentors if they wish.
