Utrecht University

Located in the heart of the Netherlands , Utrecht University is firmly founded on tradition. Utrecht University , which recently celebrated its 365th anniversary, has developed into one of Europe 's largest and most prominent institutes of research and education. With 47 Bachelor's programmes and 162 Master's programmes, Utrecht University offers the broadest spectrum of disciplines available in the Netherlands , innovative research and liaises with universities and research centres all over the world. In the organization of the university's teaching and research, quality is the key. The curricula of Utrecht 's international Master's programmes are internationally oriented – a must for scientists and scholars in an increasingly globalized world. Because of the different nationalities and cultural backgrounds of the students, they are trained to work in an international environment from the start.

Utrecht University hosts around 25,000 students, in 108 academic programmes: 45 Bachelor's programmes, 43 Master's programmes, 1 Medicine programme, 1 Veterinary Medicine programme and 18 IVLOS teacher training programmes. In 2003, 412 PhDs were granted, and the n umber of research institutes coordinated by Utrecht University is 23, among which the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations, which is directly involved in the REMS project.  

Mission
The Strategic Plan 2005-2009 adopted by Utrecht University in May 2005 is based on Utrecht University 's mission. Utrecht University is a large and multifaceted knowledge centre that aims to provide teaching and research of international quality. The University aims to educate young people; train new generations of researchers; develop academics who have both specialist knowledge and professional skills; conduct groundbreaking research; and address social issues and work towards solving them.

In order to apply a similar format to all research master programs offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Graduate School: Utrecht School of Social and Behavioral Sciences was founded in 2002. It offers a number of English-language research master's programs. Each program is an intensive two-year training in combining theory and research, in courses, assignments and a final thesis. Students are selected on the basis of their research interest, knowledge of methods and statistics and prior grades. Each year about 15 students are admitted per program. The programs are:

MERM is one master program offered by the USSBS which was introduced by the research school associated with Utrecht University : ERCOMER ( European Research Center on Migration and Ethnic Relations) . The teachers and supervisors involved in the MSc MERM are fellows of ERCOMER and will be active participants in the REMS project.
